Abstract

Bacterial meningitis remains a significant public health concern in Brazil, particularly in light of the resurgence of meningococcal outbreaks observed in different regions of the country in recent years. This study is characterized as a qualitative bibliographic review aimed at analyzing the epidemiological challenges related to the occurrence of the disease, highlighting the role of health surveillance, vaccination coverage, and integrated prevention strategies among vulnerable populations. The methodology consisted of consulting and analyzing scientific publications, technical documents, and epidemiological data available in national and international databases, selected according to relevance and timeliness criteria. The findings revealed that declining vaccination coverage, combined with socioeconomic inequalities, limited access to healthcare services, and the circulation of highly transmissible meningococcal serogroups, contributes to an increased risk of outbreaks and severe cases. It is concluded that strengthening epidemiological surveillance actions, expanding immunization strategies, continuously monitoring health indicators, and implementing intersectoral interventions are essential measures to reduce the incidence of bacterial meningitis and promote greater protection for the most susceptible populations.
