Abstract

Suicide attempts among LGBT adolescents constitute a significant public health issue associated with contexts of violence, discrimination, psychological distress, and weak support networks. Objective: To identify, in the scientific literature, the risk factors associated with suicide attempts among LGBT adolescents. Method: This is a literature review conducted between April and May 2026 using the Web of Science, Virtual Health Library (BVS), PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL databases. Scientific articles available in free full-text format, published between 2021 and 2026 in Portuguese, English, or Spanish, were included. After applying eligibility criteria and removing duplicates, 13 articles comprised the final sample. Data were analyzed using descriptive thematic analysis. Results and discussion: The studies demonstrated that LGBT adolescents exhibit greater vulnerability to suicidal ideation, self-harm, and suicide attempts compared to cisgender, heterosexual adolescents. The main risk factors identified were grouped into five categories: violence, bullying, and victimization; discrimination, stigma, and minority stress; psychological distress and self-harm; weak family, social, and school support; and socioeconomic and intersectional vulnerabilities. Final considerations: It is concluded that suicide attempts among LGBT adolescents do not stem from sexual or gender identity itself, but rather from contexts of violence, exclusion, psychological distress, rejection, and social inequalities. The need for intersectoral, welcoming, and affirmative strategies is emphasized.
