Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a major global public health problem due to its high burden of morbidity, mortality, and disability, associated with exposure to modifiable risk factors and inequalities in access to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. This study is characterized as a qualitative and descriptive literature review and aims to analyze the epidemiological burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, its relationship with social inequalities and environmental factors, and the main challenges for the organization of healthcare networks. The research was conducted through the review and analysis of scientific publications and institutional documents related to epidemiology, risk factors, and healthcare for people living with the disease. The findings highlight the influence of smoking, air pollution, occupational and household exposures, socioeconomic vulnerability, and difficulties in accessing early diagnosis and continuous care. The need for integration between prevention, primary care, specialized assistance, and pulmonary rehabilitation was also identified. It is concluded that addressing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease requires intersectoral policies, reduction of preventable exposures, timely diagnosis, and the strengthening of integrated and equitable healthcare networks.
