Abstract

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in adults manifests predominantly through executive dysfunctions, with inhibitory control deficit being one of its primary characteristics. This article analyzes the correlation between impulse control failure and the development of Oniomania (compulsive buying disorder) in this population. The general objective is to understand how the deregulation of the dopaminergic reward system, associated with time blindness and vulnerability to immediate gratification stimuli, predisposes adults with ADHD to debt and financial disorganization. Utilizing a literature review as methodology, the research synthesizes recent neuroscientific and behavioral findings. The results indicate that the act of buying functions as a dysfunctional mechanism of emotional and chemical self-regulation. It is concluded that the effective treatment of ADHD in adults must integrate a pharmacological approach prescribed through medical monitoring, in addition to cognitive-behavioral therapy strategies and adapted financial psychoeducation, aiming to mitigate the socioeconomic impacts of oniomania.
