Depression is one of the most prevalent mental disorders today and has a high incidence among basic education teachers, being associated with working conditions and psychosocial factors present in the school environment. This study aimed to investigate the factors associated with the development of depression among basic education teachers and its impacts on health and professional performance. This is a bibliographic research study based on the analysis of scientific articles published in the SciELO, LILACS, and PubMed databases over the last ten years. The results revealed a high prevalence of depressive symptoms, anxiety, stress, and burnout syndrome among teachers, mainly associated with work overload, long working hours, school violence, low professional recognition, inadequate working conditions, and career dissatisfaction. In addition to emotional and cognitive impairments, depression negatively affects quality of life, productivity, and interpersonal relationships in the school environment. It is concluded that teachers’ mental illness has a multifactorial nature, highlighting the need for institutional and public policies focused on mental health promotion, professional appreciation, and improvement of teachers’ working conditions.
