Abstract

Low back pain is a condition that affects the lumbar region of the spine and often interferes with simple activities of daily living. It is associated with factors such as weakness of the abdominal and paravertebral muscles, poor posture, excess body weight, a sedentary lifestyle, and conditions related to the work environment. This field-based, exploratory, descriptive, and quantitative study analyzed the effects of the Pilates method on low back pain in a studio located in the Sertão region of Paraíba, Brazil. The study aimed to describe the sociodemographic profile of the participants, assess pain perception before and after the sessions, and report their experiences during the practices. Twenty volunteers with chronic low back pain participated in the study and were assessed using a questionnaire containing sociodemographic and clinical variables, as well as questions regarding their perception of the influence of the method. Most participants were female (90.0%). After the intervention, severe pain decreased from 55.0% to 15.0%, very severe pain was reduced to 0.0%, mild pain increased from 0.0% to 30.0%, and moderate pain became predominant (55.0%). The participants’ practical perception indicated high adherence and satisfaction, with 95.0% reporting that the exercises were appropriate for their physical condition and 65.0% reporting significant improvement in mobility. It was concluded that the practice of the Pilates method had a positive influence on pain intensity, mobility, and the clinical acceptance of the participants evaluated.
