ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY AND BIOENERGY IN TIMES OF CLIMATE CHANGE: THE STRATEGIC ROLE OF BIOMASS AMIDST THE INTENSIFICATION OF EL NIÑO-RELATED EVENTS

Environmental sustainability and bioenergy have become central themes in addressing the challenges imposed by climate change, particularly the intensification of events associated with El Niño. This study is a Bibliographic Review that aims to analyze the strategic role of biomass as a renewable energy source in the face of climate-related challenges, highlighting its contribution to energy security, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and the strengthening of a low-carbon economy. The methodology consisted of analyzing national and international scientific publications, technical documents, and institutional reports related to climate change, bioenergy, and the sustainable use of biomass. The findings indicate that biomass is a viable energy alternative because it enables the utilization of agricultural, forestry, and agro-industrial residues, promoting the diversification of the energy matrix, the valorization of renewable resources, and the reduction of dependence on fossil fuels. In addition to energy generation, some biomass residues and by-products also have potential applications in sustainable construction materials, expanding opportunities for resource valorization and supporting the circular economy. The review also identified that extreme climate events associated with El Niño may affect the availability of biomass feedstock, requiring integrated planning, technological innovation, and public policies focused on adaptation and the sustainable management of natural resources. It is concluded that strengthening biomass production chains is a strategic approach to increasing environmental and energy resilience, contributing to climate change mitigation and the promotion of sustainable development.
